About Garth

I am a Licensed Independent Social Worker who received my Master of Social Work from The Ohio State University and Bachelor of Arts from Otterbein University. I am prepared to help those struggling with trauma, anxiety, depression, stress, addictions, mood instability, low self-esteem, and other emotional and mental concerns. I enjoy working with individual adolescents and adults, and have experience working in schools, community mental health, and with people who have developmental disabilities. I have had training in several treatment approaches, including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing), Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy),.

Approach

Finding the right fit in a therapy relationship is the most important factor in determining whether it will ultimately be helpful. I will focus on making sure we are on the same page about why we are meeting, what we are doing with that time, and whether it is creating the change you are hoping to find. This idea, known as therapeutic rapport, has been shown to be more important in predicting positive outcomes than the specific "brand" of therapy being used. I always strive to stay curious and see the best in my clients. I also love the idea of being culturally humble: it describes an acknowledgement that I while I may not fully understand your lived experience, we can accept and learn from each other.

Environment

Honesty and transparency are crucial to my work. But trusting someone, even a professional, with the details of your life and struggles can be intimidating! To me, therapy is a partnership and a collaboration, and your perspective is valued. You won't be judged, no matter what you say. My hope is that while you are in my office you feel safe, comfortable, and validated.

What is Therapy?

What is therapy?

Therapy can look and feel MANY different ways depending on where you are in life, and what your challenges and goals are coming in. And... sometimes those goals change over time. While your immediate concerns may be very much in the present, often we will discover that there are underlying issues from the past that are not resolved and continue to impact our emotional, behavioral, and relational well-being. The therapist (me!) uses a variety of techniques to help the client (you!) move from distress to relief. Here are a some of the approaches and perspectives that I find helpful:

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Mindfulness

Solution-Focused

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

Humanism

What to Expect

Have a seat in the waiting area and I'll come out to greet you at your appointment time. We'll go over your initial paperwork and make sure everything is clear. I'll ask you a series of questions to get a picture of what your life looks like now and to understand why you're seeking help. We'll discuss your hopes for what will change, and we'll start to create a plan of how to get there. And of course, you'll have a chance to ask any questions you may have.
